About the Author
Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, and his numerous awards and honours include the IEEE Medal of Honour (1990) and the Marconi Prize (2003). He was awarded the MIT Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1993, and this book is based on his 20 years of experience of teaching this subject to students.

Excellent Textbook

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

About the Author
Award-winning Tennessee sculptor Lundy Cupp never knew he could carve anything until picking up a pocketknife at age 47. But the former criminal fraud investigator and bounty hunter made a major life change, and now pursues his art as a full time career. Lundy has been featured on two PBS television shows, is a frequent contributor to Woodcarving Illustrated magazine, and demonstrates pumpkin carving for corporate events, museums, and private parties. Hilarious, true genius.

One for the fans definitely, but I do think that even if you've never heard of the Count and have just picked up the book (wash your hands afterwards btw) and are idly flicking through it, it is so consistently mad (just the right amount of mad though) and funny that you will quickly be hooked. KRIS AKABUSSI, MELVIN HEYES AND UNA STUBBS CAN'T ALL BE WRONG. DAMN I'VE knocked the caps lock on again. Whose bright idea was to put it there?

Great content aside from numerous typos

I'm using this book for as part of an Informatics course. The content is great aside from numerous, and simply embarrassing typos.

For example, the book says "sue" instead of "use". The company name Uniqlo is spelled Uniclo at one point.

This is an academic text which costs quite a bit of money and I'm baffled how they get away with such poor proofreading. Granted, one can look past the typos, but for the premium prices which are charged to students, they are frankly unforgivable.

I suppose the main problem is that most students won't be looking at reviews before they buy, but will HAVE to buy it. If you buy it, be on the lookout for the typos.

Setting the typos aside, it's a good and informative text.

Good luck!

This book is poorly written. It is very difficult to understand and even more difficult to read. Don't believe me? Just try reading chapter one. The Author refuses to use simple wording to explain simple concepts. Every sentence drags on and on and it never pinpoints the main idea. I am taking a graduate class and we have a mid-term exam coming up.On what? I will never know. This book comes with one resource of poorly written power points that can't even attempt to explain the material. There are no practice questions and honestly no hope. Good luck!

I think this book has a lot of good information that relates to the business world. The principles and concepts were tough to understand at times because of the in-depth explanations that seem to drag on. I have read some better marketing and management books over my college career. The book did add some value to my life and how to carry out the objectives of a company or organization.

Bravo, Ms. Nielsen!

When I hear the 1960s, I associate the decade with Neil Armstrong and his stepping on the moon, JFK’s assassination, lots of classic TV shows, and even my parents’ childhood. For other people, they can probably only associate one thing with the 1960s – that fateful day Berlin was divided and the Wall that continued to haunt their lives for 28 years. I remember learning about the Berlin Wall and Reagan's famous quote in social studies; yet, I never pursued reading any further information. A Night Divided was the first historical fiction I read on the subject and I must say Ms. Nielsen does a fantastic job with drawing the readers into this ghastly point in history.

Gerta, her brother Fritz, and their mother wake up one morning to find a fence separating them from West Berlin but more tragically, from their father and other brother who went to West Berlin only 2 days before. The book is told by Gerta, who struggles under the oppressiveness of the GDR while attempting to dig a tunnel to the other side with hopes to unite her divided family. Gerta’s voice is strong and mature for a 12 year old girl as her circumstances force her to grow up before her time. Her courage and will to be free are admirable while her struggle to forgive and understand the world’s cruelties is plausible.

I must warn potential readers that you will not want to put this book down. From the first page, it is nonstop and Nielsen keeps you on edge with each new plot development (we fans know she is an expert at this!). Working and even sleeping got in my way of finishing this book sooner than I actually did. The provided historical pictures and map prior to the story prepare the readers for the somber yet hopeful mood of the book and many of the quotes at each chapter’s beginning will stay with you. A Night Divided is a book that should be read by every historical fiction fan and every social studies classroom. I think it is safe to say that Nielsen is wonderful at writing fantasy and historical fiction!

There's no one like Calatrava

This book goes into great detail in describing some of Calatrava's greatest architectural pieces. There are photographs (night and day shots) accompanying the CAD plans. It a great book to look through and learn from.
