Do no be intimidated

I have no idea how D. Ballard came to the conclusion the diamond pattern was the first one to be worked, it is 24 pages into the text after cloth stitch, half stitch, and footsides which is about where it should be. The book encourages careful reading of the sections on how to interpret abbreviations and symbols, but provides the tools (mostly gradually) on how to 'read' a pattern which I find much more useful than written instruction. I am a self-taught lacemaker, and as with all self-teaching you must be very self-motivated, this book is no exception. The extra touches added were things I would have never known without personal tutor, and I am pleased with the book as a reference and clarification on points my online self-teaching could not cover. Regrettably, the pricetag for these books is high, so I recommended a high quality used copy.

About the Author
Christian Emery is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Plymouth, UK. He was previously a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics. He is the author of several articles and book chapters on US foreign policy and US-Iranian relations and has written for a variety of mainstream media outlets. He is currently working on a collaborative research project which examines Iranian national role conceptions.

This is an excellent analysis of America's policies toward Iran during the 1978-79 Iranian Revolution. Using primary sources, like documents and interviews, Dr. Emery really seems to grasp the true dynamics of US policy during and after the revolution. More importantly, he delves deep into important historical debates, particularly the mystery surrounding an American effort to provide the Bazargan government with intelligence on Iraq just prior to the Iranian hostage crisis. For those who are interested in the origins of America's policies toward Iran, this book is a must read.
