The Physician, by Noah Gordon

In the 11th century, Rob Cole left poor, disease-ridden London to make his way across the land, hustling, juggling, peddling cures to the sick—and discovering the mystical ways of healing. It was on his travels that he found his own very real gift for healing—a gift that urged him on to become a doctor. So all consuming was his dream, that he made the perilous, unheard-of journey to Persia, to its Arab universities where he would undertake a transformation that would shape his destiny forever.

From Library Journal
When nine-year-old Rob Cole felt the life force slipping from his mother's hand he could not foresee that this terrifying awareness of impending death was a gift that would lead him from the familiar life of 11th-century London to small villages throughout England and finally to the medical school at Ispahan. Though apprenticed to an itinerant barber surgeon, it is the dazzling surgery of a Jewish physician trained by the legendary Persian physician Avicenna that inspires him to accept his gift and to commit his life to healing by studying at Avicenna's school. Despite the ban on Christian students, Rob goes there, disguising himself as a Jew to gain admission. Gordon has written an adventurous and inspiring tale of a quest for medical knowledge pursued in a violent world full of superstition and prejudice. Recommended. Literary Guild alternate. Review
"An adventurous and inspiring tale of a quest for medical knowledge pursued in a violent world full of superstition and prejudice. Recommended."  —Library Journal

From the Publisher
Set against the superstition and splendor of the 11th century, the engrossing story of Rob J. Cole unfolds. A penniless orphan, Rob was blessed with a gift that, in the days of witchcraft, could send a man to the stake: he had the ability to sense the chill hand of death when it settled on the living. His skill quickened with the potency of knowledge, and he knew he was born to heal and to be a physician. His quest would take him from the rough roads of Britain to the sumptuous and corrupt courts of Persia and the school of the greatest healer of his time. Disguised as a Jew, toiling as a war surgeon in the conflicts of Eastern empires, he would be helped by mighty patrons and threatened by plague and the cruel prejudice of mullahs and clerics. And always, beside the pure flame of learning there burned a fierce passion — for the fiery–eyed beauty of a woman he could never leave.

I can't believe that Americans don't know Noah Gordon
By Erin
READ THIS BOOK - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
As an American living in Germany, I learned of this unbelievable American author about 5 years ago. It was at this time that his book THE PHYSICAN was recommended to me as the best book these people had ever read. I heard this so many times in various different cities from people of different ages and backgrounds. Of course they had all read it in German and were all shocked that I had never heard of Noah Gordon.
Over the course of the next year I searched for the book each time I was in the US and when I finally received my copy I devoured it. My mother joined me in Germany and I recommended it - she finished all 1200 or so pages in a week and loved it too!
Since it's been so long since I read THE PHYSICIAN I hesitate to comment directly on the book (also because I'm a lousy writer and would never do it justice) but I will say I have since read every other Noah Gordon book I could get. I was never disappointed - THE SHAMAN was just as magical as THE PHYSICIAN.
I'm writing now because the Germans have just given me the tip that Mr. Gordon has yet another winner, I think it's called THE LAST JEW?, in any case I'll be ordering the hardback immediately. My library wouldn't be complete without it.

Good but not excellent
By Pavel Pracný
I saw the book called The Physician for first time after I read I, Claudius. It was in some list of recommended historical novels. I was looking for a novel set in medieval times. In the end I moved to something else, but some time later, when I saw that The Physician on the Kindle Daily Deal just for 2$, I did not hesitate to buy it. I started reading the book, but at the time I did not have enought motivation and experience in reading English to get into it and I put it aside in second chapter.

It took me a year and half to get back to it - I was siting on a train and browsed my Kindle, looking for something to amuse myself with. I opened the book again, finished the second chapter, finished the third and was captured. I've read the remaining thousand pages in about a week.

The Physician isn't as vivid or complex as I, Claudius or Egyptian, maybe even because it is written from third person perspective. And in my opinion it is not as good as these classic books. On the other hand Noah Gordon sometimes builds really good atmosphere and unravels a subplots which lead to (at least fo me) unforeseen culminations. Besides the life of the main character - although still pretty extraordinary - is overall much more common. It was quite easy to understand him and his motivations.

In the year 1020, a London boy called Rob becomes an orphan, and is taken as an apprentice by a Barber-surgeon. Rob learns his craft and travels around England. Eventually he decides to become a Physician to be able to heal and help people as good as anyone could. Therefore he sets onto voyage to Ispahan in Persia to study with Ibn Sina, greatest physician of middle ages. The biggest problem is, that only muslim and jews are allowed to study there. So he decides to disguise as a neglectfuly raised young jew...

Very interesting is the insight into the relationships between christians and jews and muslims and jews - it really helped me to understand some differencies. I think, that the author is probably of jewish heritage. On the other hand - the women are quite plain characters. And I am pretty sure that the book is historically inaccurate. But I really enjoyed the details of Robs travels and the description of everyday life...

Rob J. Cole and the lack of "political correctness" make this book a treasure
By maj
I know this book was written way back in the 80s but for some reason I only got around to reading it in 2013, and it was definitely worth waiting this long to read.

I won't get into the plot - it's way too intricate to simplify in a few lines. However, I will say that :

- Rob J. Cole is one of the best characters ever written. We are told about his life, from miserable childhood to unpredictable adulthood, with exquisite detail. He is not perfect. In fact his flaws and virtues are well balanced, making him this amazingly real character. The other characters are well-rounded as well, making you feel attached to them immediately.

-The other thing I loved about this book was the fact that although we encounter Christians, Jews and Muslims throughout the book, Mr. Gordon plays around them and manages to not fall into the "political correctness" authors tend to fall into these days to avoid controversy. There is no hypocrisy or false praise of any sort. The characters and their traditions and beliefs are accurately described, without adding or taking away anything. That in itself is remarkable.

- The whole time I felt like I was in a traveling machine, watching how the people lived and tried to get by day by day. It was a wonderful picture of life in the middle ages. How accurate, I'm not sure, but the fact remains, Mr. Gordon wrote the hell out of it. I thought it was funny how even in Persia, people would also adopt their occupation as their surname. I mean, I know it was used in the western world (hence the Thatchers, Schumachers, Chevaliers and Zapateros found in Europe), but I never knew Hakim, which is a surname I've come across quite often where I live, meant Doctor back then and there.

I just can't find the words to praise this book enough. I read enough books a year to know that it's unlikely I'll come across another book this year that is as good and enticing as The Physician .

Just know that if you do decide to read it, set aside a few days or weeks (according to your reading speed and free time), because you will not (and won't want to) put it down until you're done, even though it's quite extensive.

Pointless Review
By Jonathan Monaco
Since this book is no longer in print, I find it very pointless to review it. But just in case someone is interested in buying it used, I'll tell you it's worth it.
The book gives you a flood of information on all those girl groups of the late '50s / '60s. It has all the groups you expect with a nice little history to accompany it. This is a great book if your into girl groups.
I'll be honest though, I'm not into girl groups. The only reason why I bought this book is because it mentions my Dad in it (The Shangr-las first recorded in his basement studio).

era recaptured perfectly.
By michael renehan
A truly wonderful book clearly undertaken by a man with a genuine affection and love for 'a sound'.
The desire to listen to them all is the mood created and then the challenge to hit the itunes library to playlist his 137 essentials.
I had to go one step further and source the DVD.
The songs still live and this sometimes forgotten or unappreciated era deserves this type of book.

I love the girl group sounds and enjoy reading about them and seeing photos. This book has both. I think it's out of print, so I was happy to find a copy.

Plans are unclear and full of errors - will cause rework
By Robert Martin
i just started using this book, building the crane. It is a nice looking toy but the plans are crap. Dimensions are inconsistent between the text and the drawings, the center lines of some holes have only one edge dimension so you have to try to deduce where the hole needs to be placed, he specifies a 1/4" eye bolt which is way too big for what is intended and would not fit inside the cab- a #8 is what it should be. Though the chassis dimensions are given you are not shown which is top or side (the sketch is not to scale) is so I of course drilled the axle holes going the wrong way so had to redo it. One reviewer recommended that the editors need to have some workers attempt to make the toys following the directions exactly as written - and excellent idea that would have discovered these errors prior to going to print.

Good projects, POOR plans
By R. Boyd
While I like the projects in this book, the plans leave a LOT to be desired. I muddled through the biplane only because I have some decent math skills and a woodworking background. The written plans themselves left out some important detail and the measurements were, for some pieces, non existent. Keep in mind, I have only built the biplane so I am only speaking about that plan. Like I said, if you have the math skills to determine your own scale and an eye to GUESS at some of the measurements, then it is a fun project. I rarely use plans for things I build, so this wasn't new to me, but when I buy a book with plans, I expect them to be fairly accurate and complete. This was not.

Good history of the Morgan
By George Wurtzinger
This book is a very good history read.

At the end of the book are numerous links for additional references.

This is a very fast read.

There is a chart of rare Morgans that will aid in the pricing.

EDITED POORLY; do not buy
By R. romano
This short book sounds like the author went to an article on the Internet and copied and pasted. No insightful info; all basic with no strategies or plans to impart on the reader. In addition, could he have at least edited it for grammar errors? It read like a uneducated illiterate drop out. Very insulting.

Trapped in a tiny town, an inexperienced closeted young man travels with his homophobic Marine father on an eleven day hunting trip with others from his father’s days in the Corps. But it is one of these Marines—his father’s former Drill Instructor—that catches his attention.

On the very first night, he seizes the moment to make an advance on Sgt. Tate only to discover that the behemoth is very receptive to these advances. When an unforeseen event pulls his father and the other Marines back home, Dan, the young man, is left with the highly manipulative and hypersexual Sgt. Tate. Dan is not prepared for the intense psychosexual rollercoaster that Sgt. Tate will take him on—pushing Dan to the edge, sexually and emotionally.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! More, Please!
By Georgia Boy
I am very well acquainted with the BDSM lifestyle having been a part of it for years. This story was written by a man who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The main characters are absolutely compelling. Their journey together as well as individually is so well written I found myself pulled into their world and wanting to be a part of it. For the first half of the book, I had a love/hate relationship with Sgt Tate. Three quarters through and I fell in love with him. Dan is a remarkable young man. I'd love to spend time with him, as well.

I went through every emotion reading this book. Love, hate, lust, disgust, sadness, anger, joy. I laughed, I cried. There are 3 points in the story where I just completely teared up. The emotions this story conjures are very powerful. It was a very emotional roller coaster ride. If you don't tear up at least once, you have no soul.

Please, please write more...just nothing further in this story. For me, where the story ends is where it should stay. I would devour anything else. This book left me needing more. A truly fantastic read. Thank you SO much for this amazing story!

WOW Unbeleiveable
By Franklin R Bowers
Wow. I cannot come to wrap my head around what I just read. I was expecting something different, way different. I was expecting an erotic story. What I got was an in depth study into these two men. That's not to say that it isn't sexual, it is. In fact the sexual escapades are sometimes extremely graphic. What surprised me most is how the sex and the story seamlessly intertwine with one another all while sustaining a high level of intensity. Wow again.

From a book standpoint, it is well crafted. There is a believable plot that continually builds; and the pacing feels right between the really intense parts to the quieter parts. There are surprises throughout. The characters are well thought out including the minor ones. If I had one complaint, it that the author could describe things in more detail; what is presented is minimal, but it keeps the movement flowing and it fits into a military feel.

From an erotica standpoint, it is well crafted as well. The sex is varied, so it doesn't feel like someone's fetish being described for hundred of pages. This is definitely sadomasochism. I felt at times that I was masochistic for liking some parts that should normally repulse me, but I kept reading.

I am so glad to have found a book that the author didn't dumb down the twisted aspect just to reach a wider audience.

I have never heard of Robert Zigmont, but I would love to read more of his work.

Wow

A PERFECT READ
By DJM
Okay this book surprised the hell out of me. I bought it on a recommendation of a friend. I was expecting just some erotica with lots of the usual fun. I got that plus a whole lot more that was way more satisfying and introspective. This is a very intimate look at two people and how they help each other to mature. The character development was just so brilliantly laid out. I wanted to know these people. There were emotional punches that I did not expect at all. All in all, one of the most satisfying reads of any genre that I have had in awhile.

Tabernacle, The, by M.R. DeHaan

The tabernacle in the wilderness, which became the center of all worship of the children of Israel during their journeyings, was designed by God Himself in heaven. It was a perfect replica of something that already existed before; it is a picture, a type, and a shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ, where God meets man, and where deity and humanity meet in one person. Every detail of the tabernacle points to some aspect of the person and work of our Savior. Then the tabernacle becomes, secondarily, a picture of the believer. Thirdly, it provides a complete picture of the plan of salvation. It is an inexhaustible subject. Within the pages of this book, the three pictures of Christ, the believers, and the plan of salvation are drawn with stimulating and expressive words to emphasize the message of "Christ in us, the hope of glory."

Worthwhile
By Jbg
Every serious Bible student should read this book. The author does a great job showing the typology of the Tabernacle and how each item points to Jesus Christ. The book is pretty easy reading, too, though very academic.

Importance of Old Testament Tabernacle
By doris m. tamblyn
The old testament tabernacle study is rich with spiritual comparisons for Christian believers and a necessary and fascinating study. Dr. DeHaan, although long since having gone to be with his Lord, Jesus, had a simple way of teaching complicated truths in ways that any believer could understand. It was truly a spiritual gift of teaching. I keep going back to his books and was happy to be able to get a new copy of this book at Amazon.

The Tabernacle
By William R. Lockhart
Dr. M. R. DeHaan has a keen insight into the Tabernacle. Every detail of the tabernacle and it's furnishings point to some aspect of the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. While Dr. DeHaan's work is not an in depth study of the tabernacle he offers an overview which whets the appetite of the serious Bible student to do more research on this inexhaustible subject which details both salvation and the Savior. Recommend it for a primer to deep study.

Foolish Foibles of the Folks from Chelm
By Plume45
These 8 little tales--reflecting life in a Jewish village in Poland--are lighthearted spoofs on simpletons, as well as the respected Elders of Chelm. They even include a fable about an unlikely pair of friends--a cricket and an imp. We witness both harmless pranks and dishonest cheats; delusions and dreams factor in as well. The witch Cunegonde wages war on a wise rabbi (the eternal struggle between Good and Evil), and we witness the trials of a poor girl with no dowry or beau. Married life is satirized, while the value of hard work (or at least honest labor) is praised. Stinginess and Laziness are ridiculed. Typical peasant fare--which applies to humanity in general.

The word "Shlemiel" means a simpleton, a naïve fellow in Yiddish. But sometimes even a fool can outwit another fool and once in a while a fool may actually stumble into a good deal. Cute fluff for readers 12 and up.

A hint of the real I.B.Singer
By Shalom Freedman
I have read a great deal of the work of I.B. Singer. He is one of my favorite writers and I believe one of the greatest story-writers of all time. I did not however find in this small book the same kind of emotional depth and intensity that I have found in his great stories such as 'The Little Shoemakers' or 'Gimpel the Fool'or 'Short Friday' or 'Spinoza of Market Street'. In fact only the title- story had the kind of remarkable humor and irony that characterize Singer's writing. The tale of Schlemiel's journey to Warsaw his mistakenly returning home while believing he has arrived at a new town, the whole set of complications created by his believing there is a Chelm Two and a wife and family identical makes for a story rich in implications and suggested meanings. The solution the elders of Chelm provide to this story and the happy way it turns out remind me of Singer at his best.

"In our time, when literature is losing its address and the telling of stories is becoming a forgotten art, children are the best readers," Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote in the three paragraph preface to this 1968 volume. No question, children make fine listeners as well, particularly to these eight stories, which include several Singer originals, as well as some he heard from his mother, who heard them from her mother and grandmother.

Whatever their etymology, the stories all exhibit the themes that run throughout Singer's body of work--spirit, life and the supernatural--all encased in an amazingly agile use of language and humor that glints at the edges.

The book opens with the tale of "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser." The former had a wife Shaindel and seven children and never earned enough to feed them. He had such poor luck working at trades that he decided if he should make candles, the sun would never set. During an especially cold winter, Shaindel told Todie that if he could not get something to eat, she would go to the Rabbi and get a divorce. "And what will you do with it," he asked her. "Eat it?"

Lyzer, meanwhile, was so stingy that he let his wife bake bread only once every four weeks because stale bread was eaten more slowly than fresh. Rather than feed his goats, he let them feast on the thatched roofs of his neighbors. He preferred to eat his dry bread and borscht on a box so that his upholstered chairs would not wear out. He was not a man to make a loan, preferring to keep his money in his strongbox.

But one day Todie asked to Lyzer to borrow a silver spoon, giving his holy word that he would return it the next day. Not one to doubt holy words, Lyzer loaned the spoon and was pleased the next day when Todie returned it, plus a silver teaspoon, explaining that the spoon had given birth. As Todie was honest, he had to return both. He repeated the exercise twice more.

At last, he came to Lyzer to borrow some silver candlesticks for Shabbat. Lyzer gladly loaned them. Todie sold the candlesticks, bought his wife and seven children a feast and on Sunday, returned to Lyzer to say that his candlesticks had died. "You fool! How can candlesticks die," Lyzer screamed, dragging Todie to the Rabbi. "Did you expect candlesticks to give birth?" the Rabbi asked. "If you accept nonsense that brings you profit, you must also accept nonsense when it brings you loss."

Others stories are less silly. We meet Peziza the imp and her friend Tsirtsur the cricket, who lived together in an old stove and shared stories gay, devilish, frightening, and delightful for telling on long winter nights.

And Rabbi Leib, who managed to escape the evil works of Cunegunde, a witch whose son Bolvan robbed the merchants on the roads and hoarded his stolen goods in a cave rendered invisible by his mother's evil magic.

Still others are sillier. These, not surprisingly, hail from that province of silliness, Chelm. In Singer's Chelm, like all renditions of the town, lived fools. Here, even their monikers are funny--names like Gronam Ox, Dopey Lekisch, Zeinvel Ninny, Shmendrick Numskull and Feyvel Thickwit.

Now Shlemiel of the title also lived in Chelm, and was a businessman, such as it were. He married Mrs. Shlemiel, whose father gave him a dowry, with which he bought a goat in Lublin. But on the way home, he left the goat tethered to a tree while he went into an inn for some brandy, chopped liver and onions and a plate of chicken soup and noodles. The innkeeper (not surprisingly) switched his old blind billy goat for Shlemiel's milking goat. Lots more fun and some Chelmnick wisdom followed.

Each good tale wags another. Poverty grew larger, and naturally her feet grew larger too. Menash had a dream, and yes, Shlemiel finally went to Warsaw. To discover the sense in this nonsense, get this book, and share it with your children, be they young or old.

The Humans: A Novel, by Matt Haig

The bestselling, award-winning author of The Radleys is back with his funniest, most devastating dark comedy yet, a “silly, sad, suspenseful, and soulful” (Philadelphia Inquirer) novel that’s “full of heart” (Entertainment Weekly).

When an extra-terrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. Taking the form of Professor Andrew Martin, a prominent mathematician at Cambridge University, the visitor is eager to complete the gruesome task assigned him and hurry home to his own utopian planet, where everyone is omniscient and immortal.

He is disgusted by the way humans look, what they eat, their capacity for murder and war, and is equally baffled by the concepts of love and family. But as time goes on, he starts to realize there may be more to this strange species than he had thought. Disguised as Martin, he drinks wine, reads poetry, develops an ear for rock music, and a taste for peanut butter. Slowly, unexpectedly, he forges bonds with Martin’s family. He begins to see hope and beauty in the humans’ imperfection, and begins to question the very mission that brought him there.

Praised by The New York Times as a “novelist of great seriousness and talent,” author Matt Haig delivers an unlikely story about human nature and the joy found in the messiness of life on Earth. The Humans is a funny, compulsively readable tale that playfully and movingly explores the ultimate subject—ourselves.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The alien comes to Earth from Vonnadoria, an almost incomprehensibly advanced world; he comes with a sinister purpose, both to destroy and to collect information, hoping to rob human beings of their future. Assuming the person of Professor Andrew Martin, a celebrated mathematician who has made a dangerous discovery, he sets coldly and calculatedly to work. But there is a problem: though disgusted at first by humans, whom he regards as motivated only by violence and greed, he gradually comes to understand that humans are more complex than that, and, most dangerous to his mission, he discovers music, poetry, and . . . love. Becoming increasingly sympathetic to humans, he will ultimately do the unthinkable. The ever-imaginative Haig—The Dead Fathers Club (2007), The Radleys (2010)—has created an extraordinary alien sensibility and, though writing with a serious purpose (the future is at stake), has great good fun with the being’s various eyebrow-raising blunders as he struggles to emulate human behavior. Haig strikes exactly the right tone of bemusement, discovery, and wonder in creating what is ultimately a sweet-spirited celebration of humanity and the trials and triumphs of being human. The result is a thought-provoking, compulsively readable delight. --Michael Cart

A Paean To Human Happiness
By Amazon Customer
I read a lot of books, one or two a week. I don't tend to review them because I know my reactions are personal, and attempting to assign a number of stars is torturous. However, every year or so, one truly stands out for me and I find myself recommending it to everyone I know. A couple of years ago, it was *Defending Jacob* by William Landay. In the past year, it was *The Humans* by Matt Haig.

I was initially interested in reading *The Humans* because the topic reminded me of "3rd Rock From The Sun", one of my all-time favorite TV sitcoms (at least the first season). Both premises are based on an outsider's interpretation of the human condition. The TV show was hilarious; this book is less so, but it has its moments. It is basically the story of an alien coming to earth on a serious mission. However, I found myself laughing almost to tears at one point as the alien was attempting to interpret a dog's conversation based on facial expressions since he couldn't decipher the dog's spoken language. The scene involves peanut butter. The alien has never experienced joy. Then on earth he discovers music! He is mesmerized by Debussy, feeling he has captured all the most beautiful aspects of the universe in his music ... but, then, wow, the alien hears the Beach Boys! And discovers the aforementioned peanut butter! And poetry! Etc. Mainly it is about what it is to be human and how it is our mortality that makes happiness possible. At one point the alien marvels that he has said "me" -- it has always before been "we". (That was thrilling.) I have inspired at least a dozen friends to read this book, and so far I think everyone likes or loves it, but for all different reasons. Some liked the collectivist vs. individual aspect, like I did. Some liked the human joy aspect, as I also did. One friend was just thrilled with all the wise observations that the alien made, his unique point of view. Another was tickled by all the Emily Dickenson quotes and references, most not attributed, and most of which, I must admit, I missed. One friend chose it for his book club, and said it was a success, both because people liked it and because it inspired lively discussion.

Be aware that the novel starts slowly and is rather dark. I wasn't liking it at first, and others said the same thing. My cousin put it aside for several weeks, not enjoying it, then picked it back up one day, and stayed up most of the night with it, enthralled. The alien isn't likeable. His mission is to murder. But once the story is set, it is a compelling read, and one I will revisit. It is an easy read, but interesting and thought-provoking, at times touching, at times profound. The idea that mortality is essential to human happiness is not a theme often explored. The book is a paean to human happiness.

Maths to kill for
By Marty
All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event--in the living act, the undoubted deed - there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask!
Herman Melville

First off, let me say that I kind of liked the book. It was a sweet (if slightly sappy) love story about a godlike creature from beyond the stars that gave up immortality for love – the love of a woman, the love of the “finite spaces” that make up the story. A little like City of Angels…

But what truly ignited my interest was in the afterward. The author says he got the idea for the book during a period in his life punctuated by anxiety attacks. These “spells” are characterized by a sense of unreality, dissociation and a whole host of physical symptoms. But what really makes these episodes “special” is the unrelenting perception of a meaningless universe.

We’ve all heard about the ravages of bipolar disorder or the crippling effects of schizophrenia. But in panic disorder, one looks at the world through a telescope backwards. You see everything projected in your eye in all its tininess and everything means nothing. You are a dust speck looking out on an infinite, meaningless space. There’s no value, no “reasoning thing” – good or evil – that lies behind that pasteboard façade.

But the book asserts otherwise. It takes the position of the Melville quote. The main character breaks through the façade of time and distance to find “the reasoning thing.” And that was apparently love, family and a sense of belonging. Perhaps that was the author’s wish, to live in such a world.

The issue of mathematical truth plays an interesting counterpoint to this position. The main character was sent to earth to erase all traces of a proof of the Riemann hypothesis developed by a Cambridge mathematician. The idea is that the proof could unlock a torrent of scientific advancement that would propel an an immature, violent species into the stars sowing havoc along the way. So the proof had to be erased, and the man and his family as well.

Anyone who has worked in abstract mathematics knows its utter sterility. Are we really amazed to learn that there is some order to the placement of primes on the real number line? Think about the proof of the irrationality of the square root of two. Assertion that the root is rational leads to a fatal contradiction in the nature of reality. Is this meaning? It gets worse in physics, where the delusion of reality becomes broadened. According to the “Standard Model” the meaninglessness of phase in a wave function satisfying the quantum mechanical wave equation “requires” the existence of photons. But the thing of it is this. Photons exist, whether or not we know what necessity propels them into existence. If Einstein hadn't realized the equivalence of mass and energy, we'd still have atomic bombs - remember the Curies, Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner? The building blocks of destruction are at hand. We just have to pick them up and put them together.

So the universe evolves out of necessities beyond human meaning, beyond human feeling. Is that the knowledge that drove Riemann, Cantor and their colleagues to madness? Probably not. More than likely, it was the necessity to concentrate so hard with such focus that something just snapped. Or, just maybe, people drawn to that line of work are, by nature, prone to panic disorder or have self-destructive tendencies to begin with.

In any event, the book paints an alternate universe in which love and community are possible (though not assured.) Is this a fantasy, a pasteboard mask? I guess we all just have to puzzle that one out for ourselves. But if you look at it at this angle, the book transcends its somewhat worn plot line. It was worth the read.

Starts strong, fizzles midway
By CTMom
Really 2 1/2 stars- Amazon, when are you going to start allowing half stars?

I am a big fan of Matt Haig's The Radleys so I was eager to read his take on an alien among us. For the first half of this book, I was not disappointed. I loved reading about "Andrew Martin's" view of our very human world and seeing how he navigated a life that was unknown to him (how do you step into the body & life of someone with only a basic knowledge of their past?). His revelations on humanity were often sharp & tinged with humor.

At the midpoint though, the story took a strange turn and became somewhat of a philosophical journey as our alien begins to learn and appreciate the power of love. There was page after page of his rationalizing his behavior (oh how human he has become!) & philosophizing on the beauty of connection. Blah, blah, blah...

In the end, the story came around to make sense and finish strong but getting through the middle of the tale was a chore.

Travis's study shows how mapping language patterns, fictional landscapes, geographic spaces, and philosophical concepts helps support critical analysis. Travis bases his interpretive model upon the ancient Greek and Roman practice of geographia, and applies it to works by authors including Samuel Beckett, Patrick Kavanagh, Flann O’Brien, and James Joyce. Travis illustrates how scholars in the humanities can experiment with GIS to create visualizations that support and illustrate their critical analysis of humanities texts, and survey, navigate, and imagine various story-paths through space and time.
