Bravo, Ms. Nielsen!

When I hear the 1960s, I associate the decade with Neil Armstrong and his stepping on the moon, JFK’s assassination, lots of classic TV shows, and even my parents’ childhood. For other people, they can probably only associate one thing with the 1960s – that fateful day Berlin was divided and the Wall that continued to haunt their lives for 28 years. I remember learning about the Berlin Wall and Reagan's famous quote in social studies; yet, I never pursued reading any further information. A Night Divided was the first historical fiction I read on the subject and I must say Ms. Nielsen does a fantastic job with drawing the readers into this ghastly point in history.

Gerta, her brother Fritz, and their mother wake up one morning to find a fence separating them from West Berlin but more tragically, from their father and other brother who went to West Berlin only 2 days before. The book is told by Gerta, who struggles under the oppressiveness of the GDR while attempting to dig a tunnel to the other side with hopes to unite her divided family. Gerta’s voice is strong and mature for a 12 year old girl as her circumstances force her to grow up before her time. Her courage and will to be free are admirable while her struggle to forgive and understand the world’s cruelties is plausible.

I must warn potential readers that you will not want to put this book down. From the first page, it is nonstop and Nielsen keeps you on edge with each new plot development (we fans know she is an expert at this!). Working and even sleeping got in my way of finishing this book sooner than I actually did. The provided historical pictures and map prior to the story prepare the readers for the somber yet hopeful mood of the book and many of the quotes at each chapter’s beginning will stay with you. A Night Divided is a book that should be read by every historical fiction fan and every social studies classroom. I think it is safe to say that Nielsen is wonderful at writing fantasy and historical fiction!

There's no one like Calatrava

This book goes into great detail in describing some of Calatrava's greatest architectural pieces. There are photographs (night and day shots) accompanying the CAD plans. It a great book to look through and learn from.

Love & Romance!

I love a story that makes me smile long after I’ve finished it, and that’s exactly what happened with both of these awesome romances.

“A Perfect Holiday Fling” could definitely become a Christmas favorite…or I could read it in the middle of June! LOL! Even though there’s no snow, the author’s detailed descriptions put you right into the moment of a Louisiana holiday season. I also get a sense of “rebirth” – Callie letting go of her fears; Stefan finding a new career, Jacob beginning to “be a kid” again…and even Sandy! There’s also a Christmas miracle feel here with Callie and Stefan not following through with their original plans, but still getting something they didn’t even know they wanted…or needed.

Jada and Mason…aw lawd! Counseling for two, please! I loved how they came together, but loved their feud even more! The sex toy angle was perfect – not overplayed…or ignored…just enough for the two of them to be “A Little Bit Naughty.” Mason’s confession about how he’d felt about Jada all these years had me tearing up, and when she took him fishing, I had to grab the tissues. (I’m thinking this series needs a book 2.5 – “Murder in Maplesville” – Eric, Adrian and Garrett so deserve it!)

Someone asked the question just the other day “What do you want to see more in Romance novels?” I answered…Romance. It’s ironic that I sat down and read this double book set not long after that. Callie and Stefan walking down the street holding hands and taking in the holiday sights; Jada and Mason fishing…things people in love do with or for the people they love.

Add that to good writing and character and plot development, and you cannot go wrong with these two amazing stories. 1-click them now! (I’ve already read book 3 and book 4 is queued on the Kindle – I’m hooked!)

I loved both of the stories in this bundle

I loved both of the stories in this bundle. "A Perfect Holiday Fling" bring Stefan Sutherland into the life of the local vet, Callie Webber, when his 5 year old nephew finds a stray cat that needs medical care. Stefan is on medical leave from the Navy due to an eye injury and is caring for his nephew, Jacob while Stephanie, Stefan's identical twin is deployed to Afghanistan. There is a sizzling attraction between Callie and Stefan. Callie's friends feel she is long overdue for a fling. Stefan is definitely interested as she is but they both start thinking about what will happen when the other leave Maplesville. Stefan started rethinking his commitment and desire to return being a pilot even if his eye injury allows it. Callie starts wondering if she should give up her own veterinary practice or stay in Maplesville. A great story where two people have personal obstacles to overcome in order to have a promising future. In "A Little Bit Naughty" Jada Dangerfield keeps crossing paths with Mason Coleman, her friend Keira's older brother. Unfortunately, they have a mutual dislike for each other and have had since high school. Along the way, one of their encounters got them to talk to each other civilly. Jade soon finds out that Mason actually had a crush on her in high school. The attraction between them soon becomes sizzling. This was a great story about how find they have mutual respect for each other that develops into something was under the surface all along.

Michael Frye is a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and nature. His photographs have been published in over thirty countries around the world, and magazine credits include National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, American Photo, Sunset, and Texas Highways. Michael has lived near Yosemite National Park in California since 1983.

About the Author

Ian Korf received his B.A. from Cornell University and his Ph.D from Indiana University. His formal training is in molecular biology but he has had a fondness for computer programming since his early teens. His post-doctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis and at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the U.K. has focused on genomic sequence analysis with an emphasis on comparative genomics and gene prediction.

Very Practical & Useful Users Guide

From a users-perspective this book serves its purpose well - it explains what it is that BLAST is doing "under-the-hood" so that one may better customize Blast's search behavior. All I know is that I really learned a lot of basic fundamental core concepts here that I previously just took for granted.

The book discusses the biology, statistics, algorithms, and computer science issues involved in explaining blast. I liked this approach because it does not head super far into any one core area but rather sticks to a strong fundamental overview of each topic. The other strong aspect of this book is that the author thoroughly compares NCBI and WU Blast throughout, characterizing instances where one may choose one over the other and/or how to tweak the parameters for both in those situations.

I orginally bought the book b/c I wanted an overview on PAM and BLOSUM matrices and to understand how Blast Statistics work. It really served as an informative contextual tutorial that has definitely raised my overall understanding on not only Blast, but to better grasp the very interdisciplinary nature concerning sequence alignment for in-silico biological research.

The book is useful. Knowing BLAST is a must. This is good.

The book is poorly written and organized. The language is vague. Explanations are too short and incomprehensible for a new user. In explaining new concepts authors often use some unknown professional terms and notions, which they never explain. I could guess some terms after reading several times, but too much you have to guess. Some letters in formulas are not explained. Authors should have thought more about their readers.

Maybe this is a book for those who already know the subject, but it claims to be a comprehensive introduction. Also the authors claim that it is a book not for mathematicians. Having a background in statistics I have big problems understanding the material. Maybe that's exactly what they mean by "not for mathematician" - saying some words without adequate definitions?

For anyone interested in Recreational Mathematics,this 2014 book by Ian Stewart is like a breath of fresh air.Stewart has already given us enough Mathematical books to fill a good sized bookcase..A list of these books is in the front of this book.Listed are 27 by Ian Stewart,5 written with Jack Cohen,and another 6 with Terry Prachtt & Jack Cohen.All of these books are what we call Mathematical Recreations.
Ian is rapidely replacing the great Martin Gardner, who passed away a few years ago,and who many mathematical enthusiasts think of as "The Father of Mathematical Recreations.You may remember him for his monthly section,Mathematical Recreations, in the magazine Scientific American,which he wrote for over 25 years.Then, there were his many books on the subject.
Mathematical Recreations is a far cry from what one remembers they were subjected to in school.It deals with all sorts of oddities,corundums,mysteries,puzzling concepts,and just the fun,and fascinating things that can be found occuring in the world of mathematics.Just about anyone with a high school background will have no problem understanding and enjoying as well as being fascinated with what is in this book.
The book is not broken down into chapters,but into about 125 subjects that will amaze you.

About the Author

Jana Echevarría, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Special Education at California State University, Long Beach where she received the honor of being selected as Outstanding Professor. She has taught in elementary, middle, and high schools in special education, English as a Second Language, and bilingual programs. She has lived in Taiwan, Spain, and Mexico and is an internationally known expert on second language learners. Her research and publications focus on effective instruction for English learners, including those with learning disabilities. She has presented her research across the U.S. and internationally including Oxford University (England), Wits University (South Africa), Harvard University (U.S.), South East Europe University (Macedonia), and University of Barcelona (Spain). Publications include the popular SIOP book series and over 50 books, book chapters and journal articles.

Anne W. Graves, Ph.D., is a Professor at San Diego State University (SDSU) teaching and conducting research on instruction in reading and writing for learners with disabilities from diverse backgrounds since 1990. Beginning in 1975, Graves taught in special education settings in the public schools for 6 years. After receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1984, she was a Professor at University of South Carolina---Coastal Campus and Sacramento State University before coming to SDSU. Her research on efficient and effective instructional approaches and interventions has resulted in numerous publications and presentations at local, state, and international conferences. Graves is part of a research team at San Diego State that conducts studies of intensive small group instruction for struggling readers in culturally and linguistically diverse settings. Currently, she is principal investigator on a grant that supports cultural and linguistic emphasis in teacher preparation for candidates seeking credentials in both special education and bilingual elementary or secondary known as ADELANTE funded by Office of English Language Acquisition in the U. S. Department of Education.

This book is an excellent tool for teachers seeking to improve their instructional practices. It is also a very useful tool for teacher trainers who wish to help educators in the process of reaching English Language learners (ELLs). It explains how effective teachers can reach ELLs. Although short, every page is worth reading.

Wow! Lots of info. in this book

There is a lot of info. in this book. I took the CLAD exam 7 years ago and remember a lot of the same content. This book goes a step farther than theory and has real-life senerios with a focus on different cultures/children learning English. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about teaching English Language Learners.

Logically laid out, beginning with the necessities first. This is much more pleasant to read than the manual which came with the camera. Quite a bit of color photographic images are contained in the book. Written in conversational style. Also serves as a good reference manual. This is what I was looking for.
