About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced tik-not-hawn) is a world-renowned writer, scholar, spiritual leader, and Zen Buddhist monk. Since age sixteen, he has been a Buddhist monk, a peace activist, and a seeker of the way. He has survived three wars, persecution, and more than thirty years of exile from his native Vietnam, when he was banned by both the non-Communist and Communist governments for his role in undermining the violence he saw affecting his people. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. Great commentary on both Buddhism and Christianity

I don't always like Thich Nhat Hanh's way of looking at Buddhism--he's sometimes too touchy-feely for me, and he gets a little repetitious with what I think can be interpreted as an over-emphasis on mindfulness at the apparent expense of the other seven parts of the eightfold path. Also, I'm not particularly interested in Christianity.

That said, this is a great book! By focusing on similarities and relationships between the dharma and Christian practice, to which most westerners will relate, he makes Buddhist concepts like emptiness much more "graspable" to the western mind. I imagine there are Christians who will object to some of his interpretations of Christian doctrine, but overall, it's a good study.

I facilitate a Buddhist meditation practice group in Florida, and know there are many Christians who are interested in Buddhism, meditation, etc., but don't want to give up their Christian beliefs. This book provides a good framework for integrating the two practices. I highly recommend it, and also the companion work, "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers."

"If we are only who we are, then who are we? And, If I AM is not who I am, then who will be?"

I have studied both these books and thought about the arguments in both of them for several years now. The one gives me reasons, some of which are based on the Bible, why I should think of my future as superior to those who don't believe in the same theology as myself. The other concentrates on practical techniques to be more aware of both my impermanence, how to look deeper and be more compassionate to those around me, to be more open to change (independent of theology).... But, also my permanent divine inheritance as a living gift inside of the present moment. I prefer the second.

Many Christians are quick to criticize those who teach the Buddhist and Hindu Yogic techniques of individual contemplative prayer as being un-Christian. But, after 40 years of practicing them, I am certain they are very similar to those which Jesus studied and spent a lot of time practicing when he walked on earth the for first time about 2000 years ago. One criticism is that this type of contemplative prayer does not request anything from God, it only seeks to understand how we can exist better as human beings in this present moment. Therefore, the argument goes, since we are trying to understand ourself better instead of God and since human nature is flawed in itself (something which I totally agree with) we are doomed to suffer repeated failure in these attempts. This argument does not consider the possibility that God doesn't start out as a person outside of us (in the Church or the Bible for instant) and isn't already existing inside of us helping us to overcome these failings. But, we know ourselves from our personal experience and also the Bible teaches in the book of John and elsewhere that, when we call upon Him for help (through Jesus Christ), that God does exist as a Holy Spirit in us. For too long the traditional way to follow Jesus has been to try and collect a larger group of worshippers than others and help convince ourselves that we don't need to go to the trouble of learning more about what others believe. As individuals we definitely do need groups and higher powers in order to solve problems that are difficult. The tragedy, is that in the past this has lead to many religious wars and untold suffering. For our human nature tends to try convince ourselves that the particular people outside of these groups are different, or "unsaved". It is taught that they need to be looked down on and need to be separated out from us. But, Jesus Christ himself did not do this, for he taught that we should look up on others this way. But He taught us we need to understand how others are ourselves. We need to do this so we can love them as ourselves. And, the United States of America was founded by our forefathers with a constitution of rules of civil government and society in order to create a more perfect union of all of us in order that these tragedies of egotistical religious and societal Church self-promotion might happen less often.

GREAT BOOK ON BUDDHISM AND CHRISTIANITY-DONT PASS ON IT!

Living Buddha, Living Christ is one of my top ranked "spiritual" books. Hanh does a very excellent job of explaining the
beautiful and amazing unity of Buddhism and Christianity....very deep and insightful. He also is able to express
what Christianity is all about even more deeply and better than a number of Christian writers which in and of itself
demonstrates how our spiritual selves are more alike than different in nature....a real wake up call for all of us!
I believe we are more alike than different and like Hahn I also participate in religious disciplines other than my own
and find it very satisfying and quite the "gift".

Good solid read and characters I liked

Nell Stark is a solid writer with a good imagination and a smooth delivery. I've enjoyed everything I've read so far and this is no exception. I'm not the person who picks up every princess book I see, but this princess is someone I could imagine being friends with. And the other lead is a traditional in-need-of-reforming type who learns a lot from both the princess and her own emotions.

A Lovely Escapist Read

I was going to give this book a miss based solely on the cover design and the name given the princess in the opening sentence of the book blurb. I am so thankful a friend encouraged me to give this book a chance. The quality of writing alone is worth giving this book a look. Add in an entertaining tale with strong leading ladies and you have a winning combination.

Princess Alix (forget all the other serene titles, it’s just easier) is the brainy Royal who has spent her life focused on the needs of the less fortunate. Her desire to empower and improve the lives of women and children in northern Uganda has led her to obtain her master’s in public health in addition to her medical degree. Recently returned from Africa, Alix jumps at the chance to attend the British Royal Sasha and Kerry’s wedding if only to connect with potential backers for her charity.

Thalia d’Angelis is Formula One royalty of a sort, if being the illegitimate daughter of a Formula One racer counts as racing royalty. Thalia has spent her life challenging the old boys’ network in competitive racing. She has the talent and the skills to compete against the best. When finally given the chance to race for a team in the F1 circuit, she gets to realize her dream.

I was impressed with the layout and pacing in this novel. Without being an info dump, the reader learns of the technical skills and physicality required to be a successful F1 racer. The initial chapters which alternate between the earnest Alix and the free spirited Thalia mean we never get bored with racing jargon or humanitarian ambitions. Instead the reader slips into the parallel lives of these determined women until they meet for the first time at the wedding. I enjoyed watching the growth shown by both Alix and Thalia as they come to terms with their mutual attraction. The fairy tale aspect of this story plays out in moments like the private dance lesson and the general lifestyles of the rich and famous at the Grand Prix in Monaco.

I did have a couple of eye rolling moments, most revolving around Alix. Her ignorance of her own sexuality is a new twist on the “I assumed I was straight and whoops I’m not” complication which may have been more effective in a YA novel. It was a stretch to believe that an intelligent woman would not have assessed her attraction toward women at some point in her life.

Alix’s innocence aside, her ability to transform Thalia into a loving partner is entertaining to watch. The desire to mold someone we love into something better is not always achievable. I suppose that is what makes The Princess and the Prix a true modern day fairy tale. A lovely escapist read.

I received an ARC of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in Stark's A Princess Affair series. I actually listened to the audiobook of the first in the series, and was looking forward to a good read. I wasn't disappointed. There's a lot to like about this book. The playgirl racecar driver and the stuffy academic princess isn't exactly a combination that seems like it would end well. It was fun to watch the journey each took to open themselves up to the possibility of a relationship with the other.
I have to admit, I'm not a racing fan. However, I found it fascinating to read about Formula One racing. Admittedly, America seems to have fallen in love with NASCAR a lot more, but the tracks in Formula One would definitely be more challenging. I also wasn't aware of all the physical strain the drivers went through. So thank you to Stark for the mini-education. I really enjoyed it.
There were two reasons for the loss of that half star. One, while I enjoy reading these stories, I'm not sure how well it would really go if a Royal actually did come out. So for me, at least, there's a kind of disconnect between reading this and what I believe would happen 'in the real' world. I'd be interested in reading what the fallout for Alix is, especially with her family. However, that would probably be a whole new book, so I feel it was a good choice for the story to end right before we found out. The other reason had to do with Thalia, the playgirl racecar driver. She's so adamant about not wanting to 'settle', that it's a little difficult to credit the complete about face she makes. I'd like to hear a little more of her thoughts on why she made this enormous change. I understand why she gave up that type of behavior for the race season. I'm a little more unclear on what makes her decide to make it a permanent change.
Overall, this was an extremely enjoyable read that kept me turning pages until I finished.

Not for the beginning guitar student

I am certain this is an excellent book, however it is not for those just starting on the study of playing a guitar. There is some great information for beginners, but the book moves quickly into barre cords and then playing positions without explanation. If you already have some skills with your guitar, this is probably a great book and I will pick it back up at some point when I can benefit from the info within.

This is the book that all guitar player must have. For all the levels, from absolute beginner to the intermediate, each one could find deep knowledge that will change forever the way in that a guitar is conceived.

Finally a guitar book that addresses what you want!...

...if what you want is to learn the _guitar_, then take a serious look at this book. It's the best that I've seen published. I have a grand-daughter that has taken "lessons" from a "teacher" weekly for 2 years, and knows a whopping 2 songs now!! That's because her "guitar" teacher is in reality a "music" teacher. Decades ago, when I started, I went through scores of "teachers" for a couple of yrs. before finally finding one. Most start you off learning to read music to nursery rhymes, via Mel Bay books and the like. Most didn't last but 1 lesson, 3 tops. When I finally found a real _guitar_ teacher, I was up and running in six months big time! A real guitar teacher hasn't much left to impart to you after about six months. Do you really need a tutor for "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"? Meanwhile, while you look for a real guitarist teacher (good luck), get this book.

Great book for seasoned and experienced players, too. I studied with Keith Taylor (Jame's cousin) for six months, did all the live sound for Blue Cheer for a little over a year in the early 70's, was a music major, the last gig I was offered before hanging it up in the early 80's was $9500 for one set backing up Muddy Waters just before he died (which I turned down because I vowed never to work with a particular promoter again, sigh), etc., and this is the best published material I've seen on "Fretboard Logic"... I got a copy for my grand-daughter and one for myself. Highly recommend.
