Lovely little book. I have read Hayden Herrera's biography of Frida Kahlo (the best) and also have 'Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress'. I purchased this small but mighty book based on the illustrations alone (I am a graphic artist) - though found it a pretty concise biography as well. Frida-philes will be happy to add this to their collection.

Enlightened Speculation

The subtitle promises that Ostroff will explain "what the organization of the future actually looks like and how it delivers value to customers." It is more accurate to say that Ostroff suggests what that organization will probably look like...and how it will probably deliver value to customers. Specifically, what he calls the Horizontal Organization "organizes around core process groups. All the people who work on a core process are brought together into a group that can easily coordinate its efforts and maximize the value of of what it delivers to customers." It differs from other models in that it is more comprehensive by incorporating "elements of some of the existing concepts, such as process reengineering, individual empowerment, and teams. But it goes beyond them by providing an overall framework for the organization that integrates and makes use of the best of these ideas in a new structure that has been proved in practice." So, Ostroff's intention is to help his reader understand what the Horizontal Organization is, how it works, how it can be developed, and how to decide where it can be effectively employed in any organization.
I rate this book so highly, not because it provides THE answers but because Ostroff asks what I consider to be the important questions as all of us proceed into an uncertain future. There are so many paradigm shifts occurring simultaneously. Words such as "organization" and "customer" seem to be redefined constantly, as are the concepts of "leader" and "manager" as well as "core business" and "competitive marketplace." Of course, despite what his book's subtitle suggests, Ostroff is well aware of all this. He thinks clearly, writes well, and in his concluding remarks indicates a proper respect for "buy in" throughout any organization., asserting that "the change effort itself and the new organization born from the old must have full top-down, bottom-up, cross-functional commitment. If done right, the integration of the fundamental principles of the horizontal organization will inspire the people in your organization, supercharge their performance, and create a winning value proposition that lifts your organization far above the competition."

Nothing New Here

The Horizontal Organization by Frank Ostroff is well written and an easy read. Its main draw back is that the author is claims that he is presenting something new when in fact it is not. The concept outlined in his book and the design principles for the horizontal organization are nothing but a "dumbed" down version of basic industrial engineering principles that has been espoused for years. The concept of organizing around business processes and with cross-functional teams has been discribed in various books by industrial engineers for years, espesially in the area of socio-technical systems design theory. The book is good in that it gives managers, with business major degrees, a good introduction to a sound organizational design theory. Any manager with an industrial or systems engineering degree will already be aware of these principles for organizational design to a far greater extent than the author.

The author sees the tradition vertical structure of business as an outdated structure from the industrial era. This book pushes the horizontal organization. The horizontal organization does not divide the company into departments. Instead, it groups people and work across core processes. These core processes all work together to create and deliver something of value to the customers.

This new structure is supposed to flatten hierarchies, integrate many tasks into a few processes, and focuses all employees on what the customer needs, not what their department needs. The author demonstrates this through the use of case studies that include companies such as Ford, and government agencies such as US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These case studies coupled with a discussion of the new structure combine to form a how-to manual for change managers, showing how companies can design and implement the right structure.

The author offers twelve principles to achieve this goal:

1. Organize across cross-functional core processes

2. Install process owners

3. Make teams

4. Integrate with customers and suppliers

5. Decrease hierarchy by eliminating non value-added-work and by giving team members the authority to make decisions

6. Build a culture of openness, cooperation and collaboration.

7. Empower employees by giving them tools, skills, motivation, and the authority they need.

8. Use information technology to help people reach performance objectives and deliver the value proposition to the customer

9. Measure the results

10. Redesign as necessary

11. Emphasize multiple competencies and train people to handle problems in cross-functional areas

12. Promote multiple-skilling, the ability to think creatively and respond flexibly to challenges that arise in the work that teams do.

Stephen King - does more need to be said?

I am a fan of reading. I read authors from Stephen King to Wadsworth to the philosopher Kirkegaard to the great American current writer, Don Delillo.

Stephen King's work easily fits into the work of these authors. Just because it is of a specific genre which seems to get short shrift, doesn't make it any less beautiful.

I have a number of 1st Editions of all of the authors above. With Mr. King, I started reading his work in my senior year of High School. I have never stopped reading his work. My favorite, right up there with "The Stand," is 'Salems Lot. I first read the paperback. I then managed to get a used copy of the hardcopy, 1st Edition, 1st Printing of the same book. I reread the book.

I had read an interview in which Mr. King explained that he was working on an illustrated version of "'Salem's Lot." I wasn't sure what to expect. Would it be much like a fully illustrated book, taking away the readers' joy of developing their brain illustrations of what they were reading?

No, that is not what this book is, not at all. Mr. King has placed illustrations at chapters, the three main "book" within the book, plus, a few more throughout this book. It was NOT what I expected. However, it is as good as it gets. King lets us in by giving us illustrations which will, I promise, evoke different emotions in each reader. His goal was NOT to tell the reader how to "see" this book, but, just to introduce a bit more on which to ponder.

Yes, I spent the extra money on getting the 1st Edition, 1st Printing. If you can afford to do so, I suggest you do. However, if you just want to see and read this book and the "status" of the book is not important to you, go for it, as long as it is in the hardcover format. I honestly do not see how any fan of Stephen King's will be disappointed. Happy and scary reading!

Beautiful edition

As a long time Constant Reader, I have read everything that I know of by Stephen King. I first read Salem's Lot when I was 12 or so and have returned to it every few years. This edition is a very nice one. The art is beautiful and the additional material is great to have in one volume. I collect Stephen King books and this is my favorite edition of Salem's Lot.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.
