About the Author
Joe R. Feagin, currently Ella C. McFadden Professor at Texas A&M University, graduated from Baylor University in 1960 and acquired his Ph.D. in sociology at Harvard University in 1966. Feagin has taught at the University of Massachusetts (Boston), University of California (Riverside), University of Texas, University of Florida, and Texas A&M University. Feagin has done much research work on racism and sexism issues and has served as the scholar in residence at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He has written 53 books, one of which (Ghetto Revolts) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He is the 2006 recipient of a Harvard Alumni Association achievement award and was the 1999–2000 president of the American Sociological Association. He is also the 2013 recipient of the Arthur Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Association for Affirmative Action.

José A. Cobas is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social and Family Dynamics, Arizona State University. Among his recent publications (with Joe Feagin) are "Latinos/as and the White Racial Frame: The Procrustean Bed of Assimilation," Sociological Inquiry (February 2008) and "Language Oppression and Resistance: Latinos in the United States," Ethnic and Racial Studies (February 2008).

Excellent book on Tiki, though a bit artsy

This book is a must have for anyone interested in Tiki or kitsch art. Describing themselves as "urban archaeologists" seeking remnants of Tiki culture, the authors provide a fun and informative look at this vanishing art form. The book does an acceptable job presenting the evolutionary history of Tiki, from the 1920s to the present. Key events, such as the establishment of Trader Vic's, and the Kon Tiki craze of the late 40s, are looked at in further detail. There is also a good look at the "artifacts" of Tiki art and architecture throughout the United States. The book is packed with color photos of Tiki mugs, matchbooks, buildings, and much more.
However, the book does lean a bit too much towards making the book eye candy. The Book of Tiki uses intense colors, and ultra-hip page compositions that make it difficult to read (typically Taschen, but I still found it distracting). Also, a consolidation of information would have made it easier to reference, such as a table differentiating the different "Trader" Tiki businesses. Also, some of the text ("Exotica and the Tiki style were denounced as contrived rituals of the imperialist establishment at the same time that the Vietnam war developed into and ugly mistake, with native huts and palm trees burning on TV."), had me wondering if they were being tounge-in-cheek, or were actually serious.
Nevertheless, this book is the current bible for Tiki aficionados, and is well worth having on your bookshelf.

Like the topic it covers, this book is a treasure

If you have any passing interest in the tiki culture of the 50's and 60's this book is for you. Containing hundreds of rare photographs, matchbook covers, swizzle sticks, and more, this book stands unparalled in its field.
About the only thing missing is a chapter on the Exotica music which closely tied to this culture - the tunes of the era get only a very passing reference.
That said, YOU WILL NOT REGRET purchasing this book.

About the Author
Frances Ridley Havergal’s formal education ended when she was seventeen, with one term at a young women’s school in Dusseldorf, Germany, yet she was a true scholar all her life. Fluent in German and French and nearly so in Italian, she read and loved the Reformers in Latin, German, and French. Knowledge was never an end in itself, only a means to know better her Lord and Saviour and to help to bring others to know Him. The Bible was her only Book, and she studied deeply the Hebrew and Greek texts of Scripture, memorized nearly all the New Testament and large portions of the Old Testament, and loved the Author with all her being. Frances was brought to a saving knowledge of Christ when she was fourteen, and the rest of her life was consecrated to her Savior, the Lord Jesus. Keenly aware of her own sinfulness and inability, her sole desire was to please and glorify Him alone. Very finely gifted, she was truly diligent with her gifts: her poetry is among the finest Christian verse in the English language, after George Herbert; her prose works are deeply beneficial; a musician to the core, she left behind important compositions. Like her works, her life richly touched the ones near her and countless many who met or heard her. The Lord Jesus Christ was her alone, only beauty, and she glowed Him and His truth. Never wanting attention to herself, Frances’ desire of her heart was for herself and for others to know her King, the Lord Jesus Christ. Her works are a gold-mine of help and enrichment. Royal Indeed

I am a believer who first became acquainted with the life and works of Frances Ridley Havergal in 1995. I found a number of her nearly extant works in a used bookstore where I first obtained some of her original small books including the five Royal books. I have learned a lot from the pen of Frances Ridley Havergal. She was a poet and hymnwriter who lived in England in the 1800's and was to England what Fanny Crosby was to America. This was the very first book I read that Frances wrote and of course, I wanted to find more of her works. I am glad someone has labored long and hard to bring back the valuable works of FRH so people today can benefit from them. This book is very beautifully formatted and rich in content. In my opinion the people who are doing this have done a first-rate job on the five Royal books! I heartily recommend the life and works of Frances Ridley Havergal. I think she is the only woman in Christian history who has such a wide body of work and am thrilled to see her original works come back into print.
