About the Author
William Guy Carr, R.D. Commander R.C.N. (R) Retired was born June 2, 1895 and died October 2, 1959.

At the early age of twelve the author was thoroughly indoctrinated into the Bolshevik ideology by two revolutionary missionaries who travelled on the same ship with him out to the Orient in 1907. Unlike many others he didn't swallow the bait they offered him "Hook, Line, and Sinker." He decided to keep an open mind, and to investigate matters thoroughly, before reaching any conclusions. His investigations and studies of all angles of the International Conspiracy have taken him to nearly every country in the world.

Commander Carr had a distinguished naval career. During World War I he served as Navigating Officer of H.M. Submarines. In World War II he was Naval Control Officer for the St. Lawrence; then Staff Officer Operations at Shelbourne, N.S.; then Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay, Labrador. As an Officer on the staff of Commodore Reginald Brock he organized the 7th Victory Loan for the twenty-two Royal Canadian Naval Training Divisions.

Understanding Polymer Manufacturing

The book Injection Mold Design Engineering provides a great amount of detail on polymer flow in plastic manufacturing processes. The book describes the basics of mold flow design and shares insight in how polymers flow and where issues may arise in the design of molds. There are plenty of formulas with examples to demonstrate their application. Details cover many aspects of the mold design including wall thickness, runners, corners, angles, ribs and much more.

Some material seems to stop short of the complete details leaving the reader wanting. But the value of the rest of the material makes the book well worth its price. I use this book as one of several technical references in writting articles for a free on-line magazine that focuses on plastic polymers and the manufacturing processes [...], sponsored by Precise Mold and Engineering a custom plastic manufacturing company([...]).

Great book on colonialism

Cook does such a good job with this book. He gives a very good introduction to why the Europeans colonized and then he goes into specific examples or as he call's them "case studies". The case studies are fascinating and the reader develops a new perception on the brutality of colonies.

A Jazzy Trip

William Claxton is one of the best loved photographers of the 20th century. He was known as a class act who managed to bring out the best in the people he photographed. At it's heart, "Jazz Life" is an extended magazine essay produced by two men who had a deep love and appreciation for jazz. The book itself is impressive. Beautifully printed, in a huge, and delightfully heavy coffee table style, the book could almost be used for a coffee table on it's own. The images? Simply magnificent. If you love jazz, and hate photography... although I can't believe there's anyone that could fit that description, you need this book. If you love photography and hate jazz, once again I'm doubtful there's anyone in this category, you need this book. If you have a love for both arts, then what are you waiting for? A true classic. A must have.

In times of economic and financial crises, the content of this book rings true. While we often look at formal compliance procedures, incentive systems and other ‘technical’ ways to ensure effective internal control, this study emphasizes a different perspective: How do the management principles and practices influence organizational culture in order to enhance control effectiveness? New theory is provided on the way that tone at the top – leadership, sustainability, accountability, and other social control aspects – is combined with formal control. The research is based on in-depth interviews with senior-level people (e.g. executives, managers, auditors) from more than 18 renowned U.S. and Swiss companies, and theory from fields of sociology and social psychology. In contrast to contemporary accounting and control research, where culture provides a context for control, here any control mechanism can in turn influence culture. The study offers innovative insights for both academics and practitioners including:

a) a new research framework for analyzing the links between culture and control;

b) statements from senior-level people of eBay, Google, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, Motorola, Novartis and many more;

c) a practice-oriented tool to proactively mitigate typical roots of internal control failures;

d) integrated theory on social systems, personal and organizational values and organizational corruption;

e) a foreword from Solomon N. Darwin, University of California at Berkeley.

Dr. Jan Pfister is Assistant Professor at the Department of Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University Management School, UK. His research focuses on performance measurement, management control and organizational culture in medium and large multinational companies.

Not the entire book!!

Do NOT purchase this. This is a 14-page executive summary that can be downloaded from the internet for FREE! It is NOT the entire book, so this is very misleading. For the same money, you could get the Kindle digital edition. I would almost rate this a 'bait-and-switch'...I am very angry and feel betrayed.

The only relationship many see between Culture and Control is that both start with a "C". They could not be more wrong. This highly recommendable book provides key insights on the close link between the two. Culture eats traditional control mechanisms for lunch, and can never be disregarded if we want to move beyond all our illusions of control. This book also demonstrates why Finance and HR must start talking together instead of practicing disconnected performance management from inside their isolated silos.

A terrible translation of a beautiful play

Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play Der Besuch der alten Dame is a milestone in German language drama, one of the most significant pieces in the twentieth century. The Maurice Valency "adaptation" is barely a suggestion of the original. Obviously some things must be lost in the translation, but Valency makes unjustifiable decisions: entire scenes are excised, a great deal of dialogue has been trimmed from scenes that didn't need it, Valency has written his own scenes in, he's moved things around, and then on top of all of that he changed the main character's name for reasons that elude me. If at all possible, find another translation of this play, whether you intend to perform it or just to read it; the Valency version is a sin.

Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]
