Moving forward the book is a Biblical teaching written by Stephanie Ike that allows you to step out of stagnancy and move into purpose.I believe that it is a definite and must read for everyone.
I absolutely loved this book.
From the moment I began reading Moving Forward I was unable to put the book down until I read the last page the next morning .
It is filled with teachings on how to renew your faith and provided continuous divine confirmation, and understanding on the power we have over our purpose.
It not only equips you with each and every tool needed to discover your purpose but it also warns you of the stumbling blocks you may face along the road and then quietly guides you all the way to the finish line.
Moving forward taught me to abandon the role of victim completely and to put on the full Armour of God and step into victorious.
Each teaching in Moving Forward is richly soaked with just the right amount of scripture to support it and it assist with the understanding of each lesson. It is easy to have passion ,ambition and drive but in a world with so much to do and so little time, every day distractions both big and small , We find ourselves completely stagnant and distracted .
Moving Forward delivered a very clear and concise message .
My favorite teaching in Moving Forward is teaching number 1# Gods Purpose Involves Your Mistakes .this helped me understand that God can use all of me.

Tony Mullen, PhD, has a broad background in CG-related work. He teaches at Tsuda College, where his courses include modeling and animation with Blender as well as the Python programming language (used for scripting in Blender). Mullen has been a cartoonist and an illustrator; his screen credits include writer, codirector, or lead animator on several short films, including the award-winning short The Devices of Gustav Braüstache, Bachelor of Science, and the recent live-action/stop-motion film Gustav Braüstache and the Auto Debilitator, appearing at several international film festivals. He is the author of Introducing Character Animation with Blender and Bounce, Tumble, and Splash!: Simulating the Physical World with Blender 3D, both from Sybex.

Getting there is half the fun

I mainly bought this book for the chapters on programming blender with Python and though brief, they went beyond my expectations. The three chapters on the Blender Game Engine (including one on Python Power in the BGE) also exceeded my expectations and fill in some of the areas that are neglected in The Blender Game Kit. Incidentally, the definitive volumes on the subjects of Python for blender and the blender game engine have yet to be written.

The rest of the material here is on other subjects that I didn't find as interesting but the presentation is generally thorough and systematic and will pay off for anyone who has the time and patience to work through it.

Much of the material is introduced through exercises presented in detail, with step-by-step instructions generously illustrated with screen captures. My impression and biggest criticism of the book was that most of the exercises seemed too detailed and too time-consuming but if you don't do them you won't feel you have really learned the material and all you will have gained is a general idea of the power of the features under discussion. I am referring specifically to the exercises on compositing, sculpting, and texturing.

With many of the hard to follow, long and sometimes unexciting exercises, it surely would have been useful had the author provided narrated videos lessons in addition to the detailed written instructions. And while blend files of the completed exercises are provided on the book's CD, it would have also more useful had the author provided blend files at intermediate stages for comparison, to get back on track where we might have had some trouble, or so that we can skip a few of the more repetitive steps.

One unexpectedly nice feature about this book is that each chapter thoughtfully ends with a section labeled The Bottom Line that provides suggestions for further practice of the chapter material. Outstanding!

I've tried to write a couple of tutorials on blender topics for my own use to get a handle on difficult subjects - it's tough. The author earns my admiration for having the smarts and perseverence to craft difficult subjects into interesting, informative, and entertaining written lessons.

Not done reading yet, but excellent

I have been using blender for a few years. This book is excellent - a must read. I am just over half way through now.

I had been concerned before buying it that it might not apply to the forthcoming Blender 2.5/2.6, but actually there is a great deal of material geared toward helping you understand the transition and the changes to blender. As much as I follow the community on Blendernation, I found much that I did not yet know (and needed to) in this book.

So yeah, this book is not written for "noobs", but if you have any confidence with blender at all, this book will be of immense help.

covers all the *other* features in Blender

I just want to let people know that this book is not a follow-on to Tony Mullen's earlier book on modeling and animation in Blender in that you are not going to learn advanced modeling and animation. This book simply covers all the other features in Blender such as sculpting, texturing (with gimp), video editing, compositing, python scripting and the Blender Game Engine. So if thats what youre interested in, this is the book. I think the Blender community is very lucky to have an author such as Tony Mullen considering that the vast majority of Blender users are hobbiests. If Mullen were to write book on commercial 3D apps, he would quickly make a name for himself as the best 3D graphics author around.

It should be mentioned that this book is printed in B&W and that you have to look at the book's pics on the CD to see them in color. Why oh why cant publishers mangage to print graphics books in color?

About the Author

Jocelyn Blink holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Economics and Political Studies and a Bachelor of Education degree from Queen's University in Canada. She currently teaches Economics at the Vienna International School, having previously taught in Nigeria and Canada. She has been teaching IB Economics for 16 years. She has a wide range of examining experience and has been actively involved in curriculum development.

Ian Dorton holds an undergraduate degree from Aston University and a postgraduate certificate from Birmingham University. He currently teaches Economics at the American International School of Vienna, having previously headed the departments of Economics and Business at both Sevenoaks School in the UK, and the United World College of Singapore. He has been teaching economics for 20 years and has a wide range of experience as an examiner. He has been a member of the last two IB Economics curriculum committees, and has led IB Economics workshops in Europe, Asia, and North America.

About the Author
Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) is the acclaimed author of many books of letters, short stories, poems, essays, and a large collection of plays, including The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Camino Real, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending, The Night of the Iguana, and The Rose Tattoo.

Terrence McNally is the author of a dozen one-acts and over thirty full-length plays. He has been honored with four Tony Awards―for Love! Valour! Compassion!, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class, and Ragtime―four Drama Desk Awards, two Obie Awards, and an Emmy.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1961, Thomas Keith is an editor, as well as production manager and art director, at New Directions Publishing. He lives in New York City.

The artist's workbench

This is a collection of one-act plays by Tennessee Williams, most from the late 1930s to `40s. These are sketches and slighter works by a great dramatist, but there is enough here to fill an evening. Student and amateur or small theater groups, scholars, and anyone with a serious interest in Williams will appreciate this offering. If you are new to Tennessee Williams, this is not the volume to start with. Some of the plays have appeared in an actors' edition or in journals, but are more readable and accessible here, and several are appearing in print for the first time.

The quality of the early short sketches varies. They reveal a young Williams developing his craft in comedy, melodrama, tragedy, and social commentary. We might not be interested in all of them if we didn't know they were written by Williams. "At Liberty," "Honor the Living," "The Dark Room," and "Every Twenty Minutes" show his gift for dialogue. "The Case of the Crushed Petunias" is a highly enjoyable playlet written after Williams' first major play production failed in Boston. It features a young shopkeeper in the town of "Primanproper," Massachusetts and a young man who encourages her to explore new things and advises that "Boston's a state of mind that you'll grow out of."

"The Pretty Trap" and "Interior: Panic" present the characters and ideas of "The Glass Menagerie" and "A Streetcar Named Desire," but with more optimistic outcomes than the famous plays. "Kingdom of Earth" also exists as a full-length play, and "I Never Get Dressed Till After Dark on Sundays" is a somewhat experimental treatment of characters who appear at greater length in "Vieux Carre."

One of the most powerful pieces in this collection is the 1980 play "Some Problems for the Moose Lodge." It was expanded into a full-length play ("A House Not Meant to Stand") but works well as a one-act. The aging and probably dying mother Bella, becoming more incoherent as the play proceeds, speaks with unintended poetry at the end, expressing Williams' insight, stated in his plays in so many different ways, that her life and everyone's life is "a question of time."

It's too bad that the one-act play "American Gothic" did not make it into this collection. It premiered at the 2010 Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival. In it, Williams brings the Midwestern farm couple from the famous Grant Wood painting to life, the husband with a pitchfork and the wife who observes that thirty dry summers have made her hard. Their son, a bank robber on the run from the law, arrives with his "floozie" wife, followed not long after by the police. In the notes, the editor states that the existing drafts of this play are unfinished or incomplete, but readers and audiences will certainly enjoy this play, even in an incomplete or somewhat reconstructed form. Let's hope that it appears in a future volume.

Why are They Doing This?!?

Here we have another collection of Tennessee Williams' fringe output...which would've been cool had this book chose a focus. What we have is 3 of the 5 plays from the "American Blues" collection. The two left out? ...plays that were early drafts of larger works...but wait! the main draw of this collection is that it contains 5 early drafts of other Williams plays...so wouldn't the inclusion of those two missing plays work to the better good? Plus there are two other early shorts that became major works floating around only available recently with the purchase of "Sweet Bird of Youth" and "The Rose Tattoo" separately. (of note one of the missing "American Blues" plays is tagged up with the "Camino Reel" release.) Why not include those plays in this collection also? I guess I don't get why three previously published plays made the cut when thematically the other 4 plays should have been included here. I'd rather just read these plays at the public library and hold out hopefully for a "Theater of Tennessee Williams Vol. 9 and 10" instead.

Delightful and Surprising.

As a huge Tennessee Williams fan I was tickled with this collection of one-acts. Some are rough sketches and/or lighter, funnier versions of his more famous works while others are delightfully surprising. I bought the book because I'm looking for several of his short plays to string together for an evening of Williams. I'm struggling with which ones to choose because they all deserve to be experienced. If you're a fan like I am, you won't be disappointed by this lovely collection.

Statistical Algorithms - More Accurate and Faster

Author Meehl was professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota, and also taught psychiatry, philosophy, neurology, and law. His publications have been cited over 25,000 times. The book is an expansion of lectures given 1947-50 at the Universities of Chicago, Iowa, and Wisconsin, as well as a lecture series to staff and trainees at the V.A. Mental Hygiene Clinic at Ft. Snelling, Minn.This book was first rejected by several publishers, then published in 1954 by the University of Minnesota Press as a special consideration for the then Chair of the Psychology Department. It then went through seven printings and sold 13,200 copies. Author Meehl also has extensive clinical experience - nearly half a century.

For this book Meehl evaluated 20 research studies that involved both statistical and human predictions. He found statistics superior 11 times, and a tie 8 time - only once did clinical assessment prove superior. In a follow-up published in 1965, Meehl found 33 statistical wins, 17 ties, and again only one nod to human judgment.

Meehl's conclusion that clinicians were not very good at predicting people's behavior (eg. predicting the prognosis of a mental disorder or future recurrences) enraged many. Instead, he preferred to analyze the information gained from personality tests, psychiatric interviews and other sources using mathematical formulas. He showed that the subjective confidence people have in their judgment is not a good indication of their accuracy.

Meehl implemented this in rarely showing up at case conferences - believing the intellectual level so low they were boring. He saw many intelligent, educated, sane, rational persons undergo intellectual deterioration - believing 'all evidence is equally good,' and everybody in the room has something to contribute. As a result, a casual anecdote about one's senile uncle as remembered from childhood is given the same group interest and intellectual respect accorded to the citation of a high-quality experiment or field-actuarial study. Nobody would defend this in a seminar on research methods, but somehow it is tolerated in psychiatric case conferences.

Another observation - gold and garbage are both rewarded. Consequently the educational function is prevented from getting off the ground. A corollary is that everyone is right, or at least, nobody is wrong.

R. Keith Sawyer is Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education. He studies creativity, innovation, and learning, with a focus on collaborating groups and teams. He is the author or editor of thirteen books, including Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration (2007), Explaining Creativity: The Science of Human Innovation (2012) and Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity (2013).

Good update to the first edition

I read the first edition and looked forward to the release of this edition. About half of the chapters are new or significantly changed. A strength is its breath of topics (from foundations and methodologies to practices and using research to change practice). Occasionally the breadth made me want to read a commentary or syntheses across specific chapters, in addition to the conclusion. For example, consecutive chapters on project-based and problem-based learning did not address their similarities and differences. Also, there are some editorial errors that caught my attention, such as the reference to the early behaviorist "Edwin Thorndike" (his first name is Edward). Overall, this is a good reference and starting point for recent research in education.
